Crescent students raise over $2,000 for the American Heart Association
"As a school, we work on jumping rope like crazy," said physical education teacher Kris Michlig. "We do all kinds of fun jumping rope activities so being able to incorporate raising money for Jump Rope for Heart into that, it's just a great thing. We talk about and work on getting our hearts stronger, but we raise money for children who are born with hearts that don't work very well. It's really a cool thing."
Michlig said charitable activities are a regular part of the curriculum at Crescent as the school works to teach students about the importance of helping those in need.
"This is just what we do as a school. We try to help out with whatever we can and when it lines up with something we're already doing in class, it's just a perfect fit," she said.
The students raised over $2,000 for the association.
"We had four kids who raised over $200 each, but there were a lot of kids who raised money for the event," Michlig said.
"Collectively as a school, we raised $2,408."
Each student who raised at least $10 got a commemorative duck, a stronger heart and a deep sense of pride in knowing they helped those less fortunate than they are.
"This year is Jump Rope for Heart's 35th birthday so every kid that raised at least $10 got a little duck to celebrate that which they're, of course, very excited about," Michlig said. "Really, it just gets them thinking about helping others, which is something we like to really focus on here."
