Nicolet College's 2014 Outdoor Adventure Series features nearly 50 classes
The series, in its 18th year, features nearly 50 different land and water adventures that last anywhere from an afternoon to several days and range in difficulty from the very easy to the physically challenging.
"Along with being a whole lot of fun, Outdoor Adventure classes make the outdoors more accessible to people," said Jodi Fox Engleman, Community Education specialist at Nicolet College. "It gives them new skills so they can explore new places while gaining a deeper understanding of the rich natural resources of the region."
Traveling by sea kayak, paddleboard, and canoe, participants this year will explore and learn about both popular and little-known waterways. These include Lake Superior's Apostle Islands; the Rainbow, Willow and Little Turtle flowages; rivers that include the Bois Brule, Manitowish, and Upper Tomahawk; along with numerous scenic Northwoods lakes.
Hiking and natural history excursions will take people to the Lake Superior Hiking Trail, Devil's Lake State Park, the Blackjack Springs Wilderness, and several other natural areas where participants will search for wildflowers and a wide assortment of birds.
Other themed activities include Sunset and Full Moon paddles, Date Night via Kayak, and the ever-delicious Ice Cream Float.
To get ready for the season, the series will launch Saturday, April 5, with classes on how to perform the Eskimo roll in a kayak and another on core strengthening for standup paddleboarding.
The core strengthening course will from 9 a.m. to noon April 5 and 12 in the Lakeland Union pool.
The kayak rolling course will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. April 5, 12 and 16, also in the Lakeland Union High School pool.
Each course is $99, which includes board and boat rental.
These are just a sampling of the many different classes that will be available through October.
