The Rhinelander Ice Association Peewee A hockey team didn't let a heartbreaking quarterfinal loss in the WAHA State Peewee 3A championships slow it down. The Hodags rallied from the opening round defeat to win the consolation bracket and take fifth place in the championships held March 15 and 16 at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.

The Hodags started the tournament with an epic battle against eventual state runner-up Baldwin. The Blackhawks pulled off a 1-0 double overtime victory, scoring 40 seconds into the second OT session with the Hodags on a 5-on-3 penalty kill. Rhinelander goalie Seth Stafford made 18 saves in the loss.

Rhinelander defeated Sauk Prairie 3-2 in the consolation semifinals. Sam Tjugum scored twice, Bridger Flory scored and Danny Zuiker had an assist as the Hodags jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Sauk Prairie closed to within a goal after two periods but Stafford turned aside all the shots he faced in the third - and 20 overall - to secure the win.

The Hodags scored three times in the third period, including an empty-netter in the final seconds to defeat River Falls 4-0 for the consolation championship. Tjugum, Harrison Shinners, Hunter Hicks and Abe Laggis all scored for the Hodags. Hicks and Laggis added assists and Stafford recorded 19 saves in the shutout.
