New ArtStart exhibition focuses on Wisconsin's urban areas
WisconsinCity: State-of-the-Art features the work of seven artists living in Wisconsin's urban areas.
"There is a lot of diversity of work in this exhibition, which is what we were looking for," curator Martin Rowe said. Included are works by Mark Brautigam, Teresa Getty, Letha Kelsey, Colin Matthes, Mollie Oblinger, Gabriel Poinkowski and Rafael Francisco Salas, all from Milwaukee, Madison or the Fox Valley.
"There is really something for everyone," Rowe said. "For example, Mark Brautigam spent five years creating a photographic series called 'On Wisconsin' in which he took pictures of things we don't think to look at, and then it makes us wonder how we missed them.
"Colin Matthes creates art by what he calls 'engineering the absurd'. Gallery visitors will understand what he means when they view his series of instructional drawings teaching basic skills for success in challenging situations."
"This is a wonderful exhibition," Rowe added. "You will see everything from the humorous to the very personal to the experimental."
WisconsinCity: State-of-the-Art will open at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 20. Gallery hours are from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, 1 to 7 p.m. Friday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. There is no admission charge, but donations to ArtStart are accepted.
