FBLA students beat teachers in Donkey Basketball
By Kayla Thomason-
Players could only pass and attempt a basket while on their donkeys, which sounds easier than it was.
Some donkeys would walk away from the hoop when their riders were trying to make a shot, one laid down and rolled over on the court and another, who was aptly named Hemorrhoid, bucked his riders off.
"It was a lot of fun, it was a good challenge," said Al Votis, a teacher at Three Lakes High School. "I thought it was pretty exciting because you always get a good crowd to show up and the kids love it and a lot of people love it just to see the fun part of it and it's pretty entertaining."
Votis was one of Hemorrhoid's riders and he enjoyed the challenge of trying to stay on and make a basket.
The first match of the evening was FBLA against the Three Lakes Fire Department, with FBLA taking the win 12-8.
After the match was an intermission where children, grinning ear to ear, got to ride the donkeys while prizes were raffled off.
The second match pitted the teachers against the Sugar Camp Fire Department, with the teachers taking the win 8-4.
"It was amazing [playing donkey basketball]," said Tom Mantsch from the Sugar Camp Fire Department. "It's for a good cause, it's for a charity so anytime you can do anything good for people it's always a good thing."
The championship round pitted teachers against the FBLA students with the students narrowily defeating the teachers 3-2.
"I thought [donkey basketball] was an exciting opportunity and that it [was] a lot of fun," said Kacey Running, a senior at Three Lakes High School.
The crowd enjoyed the games, laughing, oohing and cheering the whole time.
Proceeds from the event were split 40/60 between FBLA and Dairyland Donkey Ball who supplied the trained donkeys.
Dairyland Donkey Ball brought 10 donkeys for the riders and paired similar temperaments together.
The donkeys wore rubber shoes to prevent damage and scuffing of the gym floors and Dairyland Donkey Ball staff was there to sweep up any "presents" the donkeys left behind.
