The School District of Rhinelander Operations and Strategic Planning Committee will be deciding on a recommendation regarding the district's new transportation contract in April after it requested to see the actual contract during its meeting Monday.

The district sent out requests for proposals to five busing companies - Bowen's Bus Service of Rhinelander (the district's current transportation provider), Schilleman's Bus Service of Eagle River, First Student Transportation of Gurnee, Ill., Tomahawk Bus Service of Tomahawk and Lamers Bus Lines, Inc. of Green Bay.

The district received proposals from Bowen's and Lamers with the administration saying that Bowen's came in at the cheapest rate though the numbers were not made available.

"We'll have the busing numbers available in April when it goes back to Operations," Superintendent Kelli Jacobi said.

After receiving the proposals, the district created an interview committee made up of "a parent, a paraprofessional, a support staff member and administrators" that sat down with and interviewed both providers, according to a memo from the administration to the committee.

After those interviews, the recommendation came forward to continue working with Bowen's.

"Bowen's is able to provide the required services at the lowest cost to the district," the memo states.

Before the committee will make its official recommendation to the Board of Education, however, Jacobi said it wants to see the actual contract.

"(The decision on a recommendation) will be tabled until April. (The committee) wants to see the contract," she said.

"We didn't have the contract ready. The committee wants to see that before making its recommendation."

The contract will cover the 2014-'15 through 2018-'19 school years.

Purchase of wired networking equipment

In other committee news, the panel approved recommending the board move forward with the purchase of wired networking equipment for the high school, middle school and Northwoods Community Elementary School buildings.

"We are replacing our network switches to make our system more stable," Jacobi said.

"We have aging equipment that requires more restoring and it is reaching the end of its life, therefore we are replacing the network switches."

The district sent out requests for proposals to five different technology companies and received three back.

One Prospect Technologies of Rhinelander came in at a cost of $34,243.22, Camera Corner of Green Bay came in at a cost of $31,783 and Heartland Business Systems came in at a cost of $31,240.

The committee is recommending the board go through Heartland Business Services for the equipment.

Last day for seniors

Due to having to close its doors because of inclement weather four times so far this school year, the committee is making a recommendation to waive a 2009 board decision regarding the last day of school for seniors.

Per the 2009 decision, all high school graduation commencements are to be held on the first Sunday after the last day of classes for students while the last day of school for seniors is to be one day prior to the last day of school for the other students.

This year, graduation is scheduled for June 8. Because the district has to make up two of the inclement weather days - it has two other make-up days already built into the calendar - that means the last day of school will now be June 11, as long as no other closings occur. That puts the last day of school three days after the graduation ceremony.

The high school administration has requested that the board waive its 2009 decision and make June 5 the last day of school for seniors this year.

The committee reviewed the request and approved passing along the recommendation to the full board.
