After competing against other high school teams from Three Lakes, Merrill, Crandon, Northland Pines and their own school they went up against Merrill in the championships. It was a close challenge with a final score of 165 to 150.
"Last year Merrill and Rhinelander were in the finals and they are in the finals again this year," said Patrick Kubeny, teacher at Rhinelander High School. "Last year Merrill was first and Rhinelander was second and this year we're flopping and Rhinelander is first and Merrill was second so we'll get our name on the trophy to bring back next year so that's awesome to see different schools get some success. I'm very excited for these guys."
The Rhinelander team was ecstatic to win.
"I think it's pretty exciting, my teammates came through so I was all happy for them," Drew Stafford said.
Some members enjoyed the intense match.
"I think it's always fun to beat Merrill in anything, especially when it is so close like that," Lukas Kreger said.
Other team members acknowledged the effort each member put forth.
"It was an incredible effort, it was a whole team effort and we all came together," Mike Anderson said.
Another team member commented on the teamwork involved.
"We really work together as a team, and it was a really intense close match," Brendan McGuire said.
First place students won a group trophy and $20 per student, second place won $15 per student and third, fourth and fifth-place students won $10 apiece.
There were 16 teams with generally four students per team. That is an increase from last year when there were 13 teams.
"The top two teams from each place come together for a state championship round, so that's 14 teams that will advance from the region to the state," Executive Director of Asset Builders Richard Entenmann said.
Asset Builders is a nonprofit organization and, with the help of their sponsors, they put together the FICB each year. They aim to increase financial literacy.
The Rhinelander and Merrill team will go to state in Milwaukee on April 30 to compete.
There were also consolation winners and Rhinelander No. 1 won their consolation final against Three Lakes with a score of 95 to 75.
Asset Builders currently has six other locations in Madison, Racine, Milwaukee, Appleton, Menominee Reservation and Wausau.
FICB has been around for 10 years, but has only been available in the Northwoods for two years.
"I know the teachers have all been here before so they prepared [the students] pretty well and [the students] are having fun and it's an excellent way to increase learning," Entenmann said.
Entenmann thanked Nicolet College for hosting the event and all the volunteers who worked as judges, quizmasters and scorekeepers. He also thanked all the sponsors.
If any schools are interested in participating in next year's FICB, contact Entenmann at (608) 663-6332 or log on to www.ficbonline.org.
