Pelican Elementary School closes due to pump malfunction
By River News Staff-
The School District of Rhinelander said it became aware of the problem early Wednesday morning and decided to close the school once the scope of the issue became apparent.
"It was anticipated that this would be a quick fix. So we brought in provisions of water and hand sanitizers thinking it was only going to be temporary," the district said in a press release. "Upon further inspection the repairs will take longer than anticipated. We consulted with the Oneida County Health Department and a decision was made due to health and safety reasons to the close for the remainder of the day."
District Superintendent Kelli Jacobi said a new water pump is being installed.
"That's why it's taking longer than expected," she said. "There's no running water and if it's just for a couple of hours you can bring in water or hand sanitizer. There are other things you can do. But when you're looking at a longer period of time, it could become a health issue. We didn't want to take that risk."
The district said parents will be responsible for picking their students up from school, which it anticipates will be open again Thursday.
