St. Patrick's Day parade coming to downtown Rhinelander
By Kayla Thomason-
There will be close to 50 floats in the parade representing banks to auto shops and other businesses.
The parade will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 15. If anyone wishes to participate in the parade they are welcome to register at any time. Individuals, families or businesses may participate. There is no charge.
"[The parade is] fantastic. We're just hoping the weather is going to cooperate with us a little bit this year," said Aaron Schultz, owner of Big Daddy's bar.
Schultz's float will be his vehicle with the Safe Ride Home banner on it to promote the program, which he runs for the Oneida County Tavern League.
The pub crawl will begin around noon on Saturday, March 15, and continue through the weekend until 6 p.m. Monday, March 17.
"We like [the pub crawl] a lot, it's good for the downtown community, downtown areas [and] other businesses," said Chris Sackett, owner of Sackett's Bar.
Numerous taverns are participating in the pub crawl and they will all have a float in the parade. Some of the establishments will have specials that range from food to alcohol for St. Patrick's Day.
It is $5 a person to enter the pub crawl and participants must visit all the participating bars. Because the event spans a few days, people have plenty of time to get their cards punched, but be aware that businesses that are normally closed on Sunday may still be closed.
People can pick up a card from any participating business. Cards are available now.
In order to be eligible to win the pub crawl, participants must go to every business that is taking part in the event. People are not required to drink or purchase anything to get their cards marked.
Participants can have more than one card but the person whose name is on the card can be the only one to get it punched. They must also drop off their cards at one of the participating businesses.
"You can't come in there with a handful of cards and have them punched or signed or whatever for five other people who aren't coming to the establishment because the whole purpose of this is to get the people to go from place to place and visit each one of them," said Jack Winkler, parade organizer and owner of Jack's Super Service.
A card will be randomly selected for the cash-payout drawing. Whatever amount of money is raised will be split 50/50 between the Safe Ride Program and the three winners of the pub crawl.
The drawing will take place at 6 p.m. Monday at the Knight Gallery .
"[The businesses participating in the pub crawl are] not just bars, bars per se, it's anybody that has a liquor license that's participating downtown," Winkler said.
Participating businesses include Claridge Days Inn & Suites, Rhinelander Cafe & Pub, Quade's Place, the Northwestern, Pat's Tavern & Grill, the Knight Gallery, Big Daddy's, Bucketheads Sports Bar and Grill, Sackett's Bar, Zadnik's Brick Oven Bistro, Moonlighting, Sunset Junction, and Robbie's Place.
Schultz hopes everyone has a good time and utilizes the Safe Ride Home program.
"The last two pub crawls have been very successful," said Nancy Lorbetske, owner of Knight Gallery. "First year obviously was the best because (the temperature) was in the 70s but even with that said we had a very successful turnout for last year and I'm sure we will have even a bigger parade and bigger pub crawl this year."
