Take a break from the heat of summer and come to Rhinelander District Library on Tuesday, July 1 at 2 p.m. for a presentation on "Grandma Goes to Antarctica: A Journey of Discovery."

Jeanne Roppolo, a 57-year old grandmother and author, will share her once-in-a-lifetime adventures during her five months in Antarctica, where she was stationed as a contract worker for the National Science Foundation. She was able to partner with scientists and support personnel at McMurdo Station, the largest research station on the continent. Roppolo met amazing people, went outside of her comfort zone and learned much about Antarctica and herself. She wrote a book about her Antarctic adventures, part of her "Grandma Goes to..." series: Grandma Goes to Antarctica: A Journey of Discovery; Grandma Goes to the South Pacific: A Voyage of Appreciation; and Grandma Goes to the Alaskan Wilderness: An Excursion of Extremes. The books are written for children, but are educational and inspiring for all ages.

For the last 20 years, Roppolo has had very diverse experiences. She has been abroad, out of state, and now lives in northern Illinois. This Chicago-born mother and grandmother has been a movie extra for Kevin Costner's "Waterworld," volunteer firefighter, founding member of Waimea Main Street, creator and manager of a Hawaiian Bed & Breakfast, PTA president, laborer for Habitat for Humanity, an entrepreneur, Park District director, author, motivational speaker, and now a photo journalist.

According to her website, Roppolo "continues to relish life's treasured moments as she travels to faraway places, meets fascinating people, and explores other cultures. Her intention for the 'Grandma Goes to...' book series: 'I hope to encourage young and old to embrace the opportunities and the transformative experiences that come into their lives.'"

All ages are welcome at this event. Roppolo's books will be available for purchase and signing. Funding for this program has been provided by the Rhinelander District Library Foundation. Call Rhinelander District Library at (715) 365-1070 with any questions.
