Lumberjack Steam Train and Camp 5 Museum start 45th season
The dream of the late Mary and Gordon Connor, the Camp 5 Museum and the restored Vulcan locomotive give visitors a glimpse into the lives and times of those who worked in the early logging days of northern Wisconsin.
People of all ages enjoy a visit to the Camp 5 Museum via Old 4-Spot, the organization said in a press release. Grandparents to grandchildren will enjoy the train ride in a vintage caboose or passenger coach, the museum, the petting zoo, the Green Treasure Forest Tour, and the pontoon boat ride on the Rat River. The Cracker Barrel Gift Shop await the visitor, and there is food available on the grounds at the Choo Choo Hut.
The Lumberjack Steam Train leaves the depot Monday through Saturday, June 20 through Aug. 23. There are four runs a day to Camp 5, starting at 11 a.m. With the last train back to Laona at 4 p.m. The rates are as follows: adults - $ 20, children (Age 4-16) - $ 8, and a family (2 adults and 3 or more children ages 4-16) - $ 60, and children under 3 visit free.
In recognition of the men and women who work in the timber industry, a member of the Great Lakes Timber Professionals Association, plus their families, enjoy a 30 percent discount. Active servicemen and women and their families ride free in recognition of their service to the country.
Special events at Camp 5 include a visit by the Cowboys on July 12, with a great display of horsemanship and all the characters associated with the Wild West. You may witness a train robbery or the rescue of an outlaw from the clutches of the lawman who is bringing him to justice. It is a great spectacle with interaction between the re-enactors and the Camp 5 guests.
The Lumberjack Show is coming to Camp 5 on July 19. Witness real lumberjacks exhibiting the skills that are legendary here in the Northwoods. Be careful, however, as these intrepid woodsmen often bring people from the audience to participate in the event.
Camp 5 and the Lumberjack Steam Train opens up for three color runs each fall on Sept. 20, 27 and Oct. 4. Guests can enjoy the award-winning Green Treasure Forest Tour, the pumpkin patch, face painting, a marshmallow roast and fresh apple cider. If you plan your visit for Oct. 4, the Cowboys will be back for another re-enactment.
