The votes are being tallied and the public will soon learn which restaurant serves the best burger in the Northwoods. Eleven restaurants submitted burgers for the Boom Lake Burger Battle. The succulent beef patties were judged by a panel of local celebrities as part of a special tasting Monday. The general public has been casting its vote for nearly a month by ordering the burgers while dining at the participating restaurants.

The Celebrity Judge's Choice and People's Choice burgers will be announced Friday at 6 p.m. at the Log Jam.

Mayor Dick Johns, Ben Merritt, Mike Michalak and Ben Meyer made up the celebrity judging panel. All but four of the restaurants participating in the public contest submitted burgers to be tasted by the celebrity panel.

"It was still a great turnout, we had burgers everywhere," said Chrissy Peterson of the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce, organizer of the event. "We anticipate this (contest) growing year after year."

Competing for the People's Choice Award were Bucketheads with its garlic cheddar bacon burger, The Woodpecker with its Western connection ranch burger, Big Daddy's with the Hodag burger, Rhinelander Cafe & Pub with a barbecue bacon pub burger, Fisher's Resort with its Western burger, Holiday Acres Resort with its Smokehouse Burger, Pat's Tavern with its Patty melt, Rocky's Roadhouse with its Reuben burger, Hext Theatre Stage Left with an Italian steak burger, Hodag Lanes with its Montana burger and the Rusty Nail with its spicy Lava burger.

"I really wanted to try Holiday Acres' (burger) because it was so large and it had this big steak knife through it because it was so large," Peterson said. "Chef Tom (of Holiday Acres) created this burger specifically for the Log Jam and now they are going to continue to feature it on their menu."

Peterson also sampled the Big Daddy's burger, the Italian Steak burger, the Lava burger and the pub burger.

"All of our visitors come in here and say 'Where can I get a great burger? Where can I go for a great burger?' and now one restaurant will be able to say, for an entire year, 'I have the best burger,'" Peterson said.

Fourth-place winners will receive the "Crying Towel Award."

"I think in Texas they have a big burger battle, a Texas burger battle, and they give away the Crying Towel Award and that's where I kind of got the idea from," Peterson said.

The chamber hoped to have the winning burgers available for people to sample at the Log Jam but due to regulations and ordinances that won't happen this year.

Next year the chamber is hoping to line up a sponsor to supply the beef for the burger battle.
