ArtStart to present two films by experimental filmmaker
Leche (30 min.) is filmed in black and white and examines details of the life of one family living on an isolated dairy farm in Mexico. Mala Leche (47 min.) follows the same family, now living in California's Central Valley, where they continue to work with dairy cattle but under very different circumstances.
Uman is known not only for her films' content but for their composition. She filmed Leche on 16mm film which she processed by hand. Her work Removed (1999) includes film from the 1970s that was modified with nail polish and bleach. Uman's films have been shown internationally at numerous film festivals, and she received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2002.
ArtStart film series director Natalie Jablonski says the series will bring "a greater diversity of high-quality films to our community. We are excited to be bringing a variety of styles, directors, languages and stories through our selections which, we hope, will inspire thought, conversation and creativity." The series will offer other films on the Latin American theme July 10, July 24, Aug. 7 and Aug. 21.
Showtime for each event is 7:30 p.m. at ArtStart, 68 S. Stevens St. Admission is by donation, and popcorn and beverages will be available. Those attending are welcome to bring a comfortable chair.
