Head of the class: Top 2014 grads planning to pursue medicine, engineering, teaching
The Northwoods River News sat down with the top four seniors, including valedictorian Amber Sheth and salutatorian Sara Krueger, to discuss their plans for the future and reminisce about some of the highlights of their days at RHS.
Amber Sheth
Valedictorian Amber Sheth will be matriculating to Swarthmore College, a private liberal arts school just outside of Philadelphia, where she plans to take the next step toward continuing her family's tradition of helping others. She will be majoring in chemistry and minoring in Spanish in preparation for medical school.
"I'm a little bit more familiar with the medical profession because both my parents are doctors, but what really attracted me to becoming a doctor is that one of my main goals for my future career is to help people," she said. "I think being a doctor has the instant gratification portion of helping someone, treating someone, and then seeing them recover. I want to be able to help them achieve that."
Looking back on her high school career, Sheth said she's most proud of her achievements in mock trial and Poetry Out Loud.
"Competing in the national competition in mock trial and competing at the state competition for Poetry Out Loud really stand out," she said.
Sara Krueger
Salutatorian Sara Krueger is planning to attend UW-Madison next year with the goal of becoming a high school social studies teacher. Krueger said she has long had the goal of becoming a teacher, though she has changed her mind many times over the years about the subject she wishes to teach.
"I've wanted to be a teacher since I was little. I wanted to be everything from math to English and now history," she said. "The last couple of years, I've really decided on social studies. I really enjoy that."
As she prepares to head for the state capital, Krueger said she will miss her time in gymnastics and other clubs in Rhinelander.
"My time in gymnastics has really stood out to me. That and (National Honor Society) and other clubs," she said. "They all taught me that high school isn't just about academics, but it's about being a well-rounded person and those activities helped me with that."
Ashley Anderson
Ashley Anderson will join Krueger at UW-Madison - the two will be roommates - where she plans to study biology as part of the pre-medicine program.
Her goal is to become a pathologist.
Anderson said she has always been interested in the medical field but it was a job shadowing opportunity with a local pathologist that convinced her to focus on that specialty.
"I'm going to be studying some type of biology as a pre-med student. I want to go into pathology," she said. "I've wanted to do something medical and I did a job shadow with a pathologist this fall and it was just really fascinating, so that really interested me."
Like her future roommate, Anderson also enjoyed her time in various clubs at RHS, especially her four years in student council. She said she may continue participating in student government in college.
"I've been in student council all four years and it's just been really fun to become close with our advisors and meet new people and help out with school events and just have fun," she said. "I might (participate in student government in college). I really want to pursue different clubs and meet a lot of new people."
Lou Bassette
Lou Bassette is planning to study mechanical engineering at Michigan Tech. At least, that's his plan for now. Bassette said he's always been fascinated by math and science, so he figured mechanical engineering would be a good field of study.
"My plan right now is mechanical engineering, but it's kind of up in the air still. I'll see how I like that and see what happens," he said. "I've always really liked problem solving and math and science, so I figured that field was for me. I like working with my hands as well. I want to be in the field and working with my hands, so I thought that was a good field."
Bassette enjoyed all of the activities he participated in while at RHS.
"All of the extra curriculars in general - the sports I've played and clubs and activities I've participated in really made my high school career," he said.
"Without doing all of that, it would have been a totally different experience. I'm really glad I did everything. I really enjoyed it."
Anderson, Bassette, Krueger and Sheth are among 195 students who will don cap and gown on Sunday afternoon as the Class of 2014 bids farewell to RHS. Graduation is set for 2 p.m. at Mike Webster Stadium. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
