For the second year in a row, Ryan Nehls, center, from Rhinelander High School, took top honors in the annual High School Welding Competition at Nicolet College. He's pictured here, left to right, with Dave Denis, judge, from Northstar Steel, which helped sponsor the event; Christian Savard, third place, Laona High School; Jake Wozniak, second place, Elcho High School; and Warren Krause, Nicolet College Welding instructor. The qualifying round was held earlier this spring with dozens of students from 11 Northwoods high schools competing in the event. During the competition students were tested on their math skills along with their technical ability performing different types of welds. TLHS senior Hunter Raatz, bottom, took fifth overall.
