The science department at James Williams Middle School (JWMS) recently finished a two-year cycle by having a final guest speaker talk to all seventh and eighth grade students. Dr. Wendy Henrichs from Timberland Chiropractic explained to the students the science behind her profession and the importance of taking care of yourself and your health. She explained the different things she has seen within her practice and how her love of science helped her throughout her life.

As a followup to the Careers in Science series, the eighth grade science teachers asked the students to reflect on the guest speakers. Here are a few positive comments made by students about some of the different guest speakers.

Darin Bloomquist - Since my dad works in the mill, I find paper interesting as to how it goes from the forest to the mills and how it gets turned into pulp and paper. Therefore, I found Mr. Tom Trochlil's (on paper science) presentation informative.

Stephanie Smith - It was interesting to hear Mark Pauli explain how much work it takes to actually have clean water. Mr. Pauli is a ground water specialist with the DNR.

Bradley Quade - I always used to have chiropractor in the back of my mind. But now, after seeing the presentation, I am really thinking about it more. Thank you for the presentation, Dr. Wendy Henrichs.

Torissa Slack - I enjoyed the fire department presentation because I was thinking about something in the medical field and the presentation made me actually want to be in a medical field helping people.

Markus Johnson - I liked how Larry Bergum talked about many medical occupations. It has made me either want to be a podiatrist or physical therapist.

Cody Sedlacek - I want to get a job like Mr. John Kubisiak, a fisheries biologist for the Wisconsin DNR, because fish and fishing interests me and I love to be outside. Also, I would like to work for the DNR because I enjoy helping the environment and making lakes a better place to fish.

Kaiya Shrader - Mrs. Nicole Steinhoff made me think about doing this job (funeral director) as an adult. I love the science aspect of it.

Hunter Bachmann - The presentation of Dr. Bryan Bowen, who was an agricultural scientist and geneticist, was the one that really interested me. I learned about the job and what classes I should take to get into the career.

Kevin Albrant - I enjoyed watching Mr. Prom's presentation (on athletic training) because athletics is something I enjoy. This career seems like something I would like because of sports. It persuaded me to go to college for medical classes.

Maddie Meyer - Mr. Robert Deede, Oneida County public health nurse, helps people get a fair start and helps get them back on track. That's something I would like to do.

Grace Payfer -- I think Dr. Bryan's career, a veterinarian, is interesting because I enjoy working with animals. This presentation helped me because I now realize that there are many steps to becoming a veterinarian after I graduate, and I want to learn more about this career. I find it interesting to be able to participate in an occupation where I can help animals.

Jada Appling -- What I liked about the meteorologist coming in was learning more about weather that I didn't know. Even though I am terrified sometimes with the weather, it has also really intrigued me.

The district thanks all the guest presenters who shared their time and talents.

"Careers in Sciences proved to be helpful in providing real-world application of the curriculum," the district said in a press release. "Our students now have a better understanding of career opportunities involving science and can better assess if they have the interest and aspiration to pursue one of the many possible careers in science."
