Members of St. Augustine's Church fly kites for Ascension Thursday
By Kayla Thomason-
"Ascension Thursday is about Jesus ascending which kind of means 'up' and so a lot of episcopal churches will do things like fly kites and I think it really emphasizes that it's not about 'up' its about all around," explained Father Dean Einerson.
Church members tried to fly kites last year but rain derailed the event. This year's blue skies and gentle breeze were much appreciated.
"It's not just [our idea] alone because there are other churches who also fly kites on this day just north of us - Saint Matthias' in Minocqua - is flying their kites today. I saw their announcement, so they're out in the fields too," saidāJackie Cody. Cody suggested the kite-flying activity last year.
After kites were flown, Einerson held mass and supper was served out in the sun.
"Ascension Thursday is not quite as big as Christmas or Easter but it's an important holy day in the church here," Einerson said.
