High-speed fun at Nokomis lawn mower and barstool races
The day was filled with fast and furious racing as well as food and drink provided by the Nokomis Fire Department. While admission was free, the proceeds from the concessions are put toward keeping the park in pristine condition.
"All of the money that we make here goes back into the park," event organizer Bette Stillman said. "That's why the park is as nice as it is. The community really works hard to support this park and make it a great place for everyone to come and enjoy themselves."
Although the crowd that gathered Saturday wasn't as big as the group that descends upon Nokomis every September for the races held during Bubba's Big Party and the Fall Ride for MDA, Stillman said the enthusiasm was as strong as ever.
"It's great. We always have a great crowd. People love the races and they love supporting the park," she said. "We really have a great community here and things like this just go to prove that."
Stillman noted that Nokomis is building a reputation among racers for hosting a quality event.
"They always tell us this is the best track around," she said.
The fans wholeheartedly agreed.
"Where else can you see some guys riding around racing on barstools? No where but here. It's great. Always exciting," Brad Thompson said. "The kids love it. We always have to stop them from trying to race our lawn mower when we get home, but wow they love seeing those things cruise around the track. And the barstools, my son can't stop giggling whenever he sees them. It's a great time. We love it."
Lawn mower and barstool races may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about family activities, but the families that attended Saturday's event races said they can't get enough of it.
"The kids love it, they absolutely love it," Sandy Kent said. "We started coming three years ago and now they won't let us miss it. They think it's just the most amazing thing in the world. Now, try to get them to watch NASCAR with us and they're off doing something else after a couple of laps, but bring them here and you can't pull them away from the track."
