There were 60 two-person teams eager to drop their worms on the yellow lids which served as the starting area.
As soon as the worms were plopped on the lids the children screamed their worm's names, jumped up and down and encouraged them to move faster.
It appeared the humid weather had a negative impact on the worms, they were much less active than the children, but some mustered the strength to crawl to the finish line.
Each table had three heats with the winners advancing to the final race.
"The (kids who) won first (place) won second last year," said Tom Hurlburt, children's librarian and interim director said.
Hurlburt noted the race is really a matter of luck.
"You get some sad faces but I always tell them I had three boys that between them competed 28 times and never even won a medal," he said.
This year's winners, Emma Cottrell and Maria Hubler, were proud that their worm, Dr. Steve II, outlasted the others. Dr. Steve II is the successor to Dr. Steve I, the worm the girls supported last year.
"It was extraordinary, we've never won before," Emma said.
This is the third time this duo has participated in the worm race and they plan to come back next year.
"We think that it's really cool to compete," Maria said.
All winners received food certificates from Culver's and Pizza Hut.
