ArtStart and Old School Art & Learning Center's TGI ArtFridays is offering children an opportunity to express their creative side this summer.

Each class has a particular theme that teaches the children new skills or techniques. This past Friday, the theme was "Stamps and Stamps," which consisted of unique postage and rubber stamps. In the activity, children received artist trading cards which they could rubber stamp and color in the images left behind.

"I really like the artist trading card," said Aurora Barthels, a first-time participant.

Children could also use the stamps, cutouts from magazines, colored pencils and scissors to alter old books.

"Me and my grandma used to do this before this class so I have a lot of pages in here," Barthels said, referencing a book she brought to the class. "I just kind of stick to the theme of me, about me and stuff."

Each project is open-ended, there is no set time they need to complete each project.

"It's really fun and it's better than sitting in front of a screen all day," Barthels added.

With the increasing popularity of TGI ArtFridays, Lenore Mangles - ArtStart volunteer and Aurora's grandmother - and Louise Perreault - Old School Arts & Learning Center teacher - are thinking about doing a six-week class during the winter.

"We're getting pretty full, we'd like to be able to squeeze them all in but if we can't, that'll tell us there's an interest and we'll keep it going," Perreault said.

They are hoping to display the children's work at ArtStart on Aug. 15.

"We decided to make it a weekly thing but thought it was a great idea to get kids involved because then their parents might get involved in the whole art thing," Mangles said.

The classes are free and children can sign up individual sessions or the entire program. The remaining classes will be held at Old School Old School Arts & Learning Center, located at 315 S. Oneida Ave. in Rhinelander, from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. on Fridays.

"We thought Fridays because parents might not be in such a hurry when they're picking up their kids on Friday and the gallery is open later," Perreault said.

She thanks ArtStart for pairing with them and lending the space.

The schedule for the upcoming classes can be found at ArtStart's website www.artstartrhinelander.org/art-class.html or Old School Arts & Learning Center's Facebook page www.facebook.com/pages/Old-School-Old-School-Too/ 683109315047598.
