The Northwoods Babe Ruth League will be represented at the Ohio Valley Regionals next week after its 15-year-old all-star team finished second in the state tournament, held July 11-14 in Dodgeville.

The team went 3-2 in the double-elimination tournament, losing twice to state champion Bay Port.

Northwoods 7, Door County 4

A three-run sixth inning was the difference as Northwoods edged Door County 7-4 in the first game of the tournament July 11. Clayton Schulz was 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs to earn player of the game honors from the tournament committee. His two-run single in the sixth pushed the lead to 6-3. Jacob DeMeyer later drove in a run on a groundout.

Tyler Blomdahl and Kurt Zuiker each had two hits in the game. Trey Gwin scattered six hits in a five-inning effort to get the win. Brandon Hess pitched the final two innings to earn the save.

Northwoods 2, Stevens Point 1

Schulz came up big for Northwoods again July 12 against Stevens Point. His single to left with one out in the bottom of the seventh allowed Northwoods to walk off 2-1 winners against Stevens Point.

Riley Tollison started the rally by drawing a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tollison also walked and scored in the fifth - courtesy of a Matt Rudolph sacrifice fly following a Schulz double.

That was enough run support for DeMeyer, who struck out eight in a complete-game, four-hit effort. His only blemish was an unearned run in the sixth. DeMeyer and Schulz shared player of the game honors.

Bay Port 10, Northwoods 0

On July 13, Bay Port dominated the first meeting between the two teams in the tournament. The Pirates plated six runs in the first and ended the game via the 10-run rule in the sixth.

DeMeyer collected two hits at the plate. Justin Jarvensivu, Tollison and Bryce Young also had hits. Rudolph took the loss on the hill. Hess and Andrew Cook also saw time on the bump.

Northwoods 4, Eau Claire 2

With a spot in the Ohio Valley Regionals on the line, Schulz came up big again for Northwoods. The Tomahawk product's two-run single in the bottom of the sixth propelled Northwoods to a 4-2 victory.

Hess and Jarvensivu recorded back-to-back hits with one out in the inning. They moved into scoring position for Schulz thanks to a double steal.

Zuiker was named the player of the game with two hits, two runs scored and two innings pitched as he picked up the win in relief.

Hess, Jarvensivu, Young and Gwin also recorded hits for Northwoods. Gwin, DeMeyer and Zuiker combined for a five-hitter on the mound.

Bay Port 7, Northwoods 0

The Pirates blanked Northwoods again for the title Monday afternoon. Zuiker and Cook had the only two hits Northwoods could muster in the game. Hess, Rudolph and Cook shared innings on the hill in the loss. Bay Port scored twice in the first, once in the third, once in the fourth, twice in the fifth and once in the seventh.

On to regionals

Northwoods advanced to the Ohio Valley Regionals as an alternate after another state's champion opted not to make the trip to Marinette. The regional tournament will begin July 24.

The team is accepting donations for its trip to the Ohio Valley Regional tournament. Those wishing to contribute to the trip may contact Ken Zuiker at (715) 367-4833 or [email protected].
