Rhinelander Community Band needs musicians for big performance
By Kayla Thomason-
"We need more people to step forward at least for this one concert. We need to expand the size of the band so that the fireworks and the music from the band will complement each other instead of the fireworks drowning out everybody," said Jerry Shidell, a member of the band who will be setting off the fireworks.
There are 50 band members at present but at least 75 are needed for the recital performance.
They need all positions filled, especially brass, clarinet, percussion and flute.
The only requirements to participate in this extravagant concert is the ability to play an instrument and attend practice.
Rehearsals are held Monday evenings at 6 p.m. in the middle school band room.
Practice runs about an hour and a half.
"If you can play an instrument show up," Shidell said.
The type of fireworks they will be shooting off are Class C.
"That means they are going to be less than a 2-inch-in-diameter shell so they're not going to be the big giant ones you see on the Fourth of July, but because people will be closer than they would be on the Fourth of July they will look very impressive," Shidell said.
He doesn't think the 1812 Overture has ever been performed with fireworks in the Northwoods before.
The concert will take place at the Riverwalk Centre. The fireworks will be set off near dusk and the 1812 Overture will be the last piece performed that evening.
"What I'm looking for is the wow factor," he said. "When the whole thing is done I want people to go 'wow that was cool.'"
Those interested in playing in the concert should contact Mary Grieco at (715) 362-4040 or Helen Creglow at (715) 369-2689.
