Snowmobile exhibit to open at Three Lakes Historical Society Museum
By Kayla Thomason-
The exhibit will open July 5 at 3 p.m., an hour before the annual fish boil fundraiser which will be held on the museum grounds. Advance tickets can be purchased at the museum, First National or BMO Banks.
Items that will be on display include a scrapbook from the early years of "Snowmobile Park," now known as Don Burnside Park. Photos depict the park packed with people for the Summer World Championship Snowmobile races.
Also on display will be George Gensler's Argosy Cup trophy, signature helmet and pictures. He became the second world champion in 1964.
Copies of Snow Goer Magazine - which was headquartered in Three Lakes - dating back to the '60s, film clips of the Hodag 50 pit stop, a vintage snowmobile "similar to the ones used in [Duane] Tillman's 'Snow Sport Safari'" and a restored copy of the very first snowmobile trail map will also be available for guests to enjoy, according to Jim Nykolayko, president of the Northern Lights Snowmobile Club.
"It's important to preserve the rich history of snowmobiling and honor those that made it what it is today," Nykolayko said.
Samantha Hytry, a Northland Pines High School student, won the chance to paint the backdrop to the snowmobile exhibit.
The exhibit is being curated by the Three Lakes Historical Society and Museum in conjunction with the Northern Lights Snowmobile Club.
