In December, Pelican School students decided to do something new in lieu of a gift exchange. The students in Kim Frederickson's third-grade class decided it was more important to give for the holidays rather than to receive. The class then challenged the second-grade students to see which group could collect the most change to support the Frederick Place homeless shelter, which is operated by the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing, Inc. (NATH).

Coins were collected for one week in December. The third-grade class collected $303.03. The second-grade class collected $159.85. Ms. Frederickson proudly stated, "Everyone won!"

The students presented their donation to Tammy Modic, executive director of NATH.
