Mrs. Arnott's sixth grade homeroom collected the most cell phones and was awarded with homemade cookies, juice, and milk. Mr. Leroy Eades and Mr. Ray Zastrow were present to serve the students, to congratulate them, and to share some thank you letters from the troops.
Artists of the Week
This week's "Artists of the Week" are: Emma Foss, first grade at Pelican Elementary School, and Payton Volkening, first grade at Crescent Elementary School.
In Mrs. Roche's art class, the students learned about landscapes. They used several different line-types to draw their own landscape. Their scenes included a large sun that was setting behind hills bordering a lake. The wind was picking up and making waves in the water. Two larger waves were made in the foreground of the picture. The students also learned about warm and cool color groups. They used watercolor paint to make a beautiful sunset with the warm colors and made the lake appear to feel windy and cool using the cool colors.
Holiday joy at Pelican School
On Dec. 11, 2013, Pelican School held its annual Holiday Music Program. New to Pelican this year, each grade level had its own performance. Music teachers Sue Stefonik and Kathy Karsten created an entertaining program to kick off the holiday season.
Despite the number of absences Pelican School had due to illness, they had an overwhelming amount of spectators. A parent commended the music teachers and students by saying, "All of your time and effort certainly paid off." Pelican staff is thrilled with the turn out and proud of everyone's performances.
NCES fifth graders get response from author
The students in Mrs. Matyska's fifth grade class at Northwoods Community Elementary School (NCES) have been learning about the slavery experience in the United States. As part of their learning, they read the book "The Day of Tears" by Julius Lester.
After reading the book, students had many comments and questions for Mr. Lester, so they decided to send an email to the author. Mr. Lester responded to the class with gratitude, thanking them for reading the book and for reaching out to him.
Mr. Lester answered every question, and added the comment: "Please tell your students for me that I am glad that they allowed the stories to touch them so deeply, that they had such deep emotional responses to the various stories, many of which were real."
Connecting with an author after reading a story can give the learning experience deeper meaning. In this case, Mrs. Matyska's fifth graders experienced a deep connection with the issue of slavery in the United States.
