Downtown Rhinelander was once home to 10 clothing stores
By By Joy Vancos-
George DeByle came to Rhinelander as a young man of 16. His first major business role was as manager of the Alpine Hotel (later the Wonder Hotel). After five years, in 1926, he purchased a small men's clothing store in the Hilgermann building.
When the Forbes block was constructed at the corner of Davenport and Brown streets, DeByle leased a small portion of the building and moved Debyle's Good Clothes there, eventually including his sons, Murly and Rhinehart, in the business. Leasing the prominent corner space was Isackson's Clothing Store, which featured women's clothing. The two retailers worked almost side by side for more than 20 years until the death of Barney Isackson. In 1957, the Isackson store was purchased, entryways were opened between the two stores and DeByle's expanded into the ground floor, remaining in business uptown for 45 years.
