Frederick Place to celebrate third anniversary with benefit dinner
By Kayla Thomason-
Frederick Place, a homeless shelter operated by the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing (NATH), will celebrate its third anniversary with a benefit dinner Feb. 1 at the Quality Inn in Rhinelander at 5:30 p.m.
"[The benefit] was great last year. I think it'll be even greater this year," said planning committee member Dawn Staszak.
Dinner will consist of a light salad and dinner rolls, baked chicken and roast beef, parsley buttered potatoes, and green beans. For dessert there will be a marbled anniversary cake. The Rhinelander Cafe & Pub will be catering the meal.
After the hot, filling meal there will be 30 silent auctions, 30 bucket raffles, a 50/50 raffle and 20 champagne glass raffles with four pieces of jewelry to win. Tickets are one for $1, 25 for $20. With the 50/50 raffle, half of the money will go to the winner and the other half will go to Frederick Place.
The silent auction prizes are big this year. There will be a pontoon rental for a day in Eagle River, a one-night stay at the Lake of the Torches, performing arts tickets, a Green Bay Packers football, a Green Bay Packers jacket, a woman's jacket, a hunting jacket, two sets of very nice wine glasses, and homemade hand-carved items such as a mallard duck, according to Staszak.
Basket raffles will contain baby bundle baskets, homemade crocheted items, a manicure, a couple of lotion baskets, a bird feeder, stuffed animals, CDs and DVDs; and a young man's basket that consists of stuffed animals, quilts and puzzles.
Sponsor packages will have a $200 and $100 Visa gift card and only those who purchase a gold, silver or bronze sponsor package are eligible to win.
The Gold Package is $500 and includes eight dinner tickets at a reserved table, $100 package of raffle tickets, three chances in the sponsor raffle and recognition in the program and NATH's website.
The Silver Package is $325 and includes six dinner tickets with reserved seats, $50 package of raffle tickets, two chances in the sponsor raffle and recognition in the program and NATH's website.
The Bronze Package is $175 and includes $50 package of raffle tickets, one chance in the sponsor raffle and recognition in the program and NATH's website.
"One time we had a fundraiser and I wanted this one particular item so I put most of my tickets in one and I got it, it happened to be I got it. So you can individualize and buy as many tickets as you want but instead of just putting a few in each one you just put in the one you actually want," Staszak said.
Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at Frederick Place, Coffee Beans, Forth Floral, and the Trig's locations in Rhinelander, Minocqua and Eagle River.
Frederick Place is an old Victorian house with rooms painted in warm and inviting colors. It can house 16 people at a time and has been home to 299 residents over the course of the last three years. According to NATH, there were 101 guests the first year and 99 the next two. More than 40 of the guests were children.
"The staff at Frederick Place welcomed me to their shelter facility with kindness, compassion and understanding. Frederick Place was the safety and security I needed in order for me to begin to rebuild my life and again be self-sufficient," said Gene Clay, a former resident. "Through their case management, spiritual and emotional support, I was able to establish employment and move into my own permanent housing within 60 days."
The staff and board feel more sure-footed and confident in what they are doing and how they go about providing a warm, safe, inviting place for their residents.
"The changes that have been made have helped with both the operations of the house. (We) definitely have been more than pleased with the support that has come from all of our communities as well as our board and staff that have been working at Frederic Place," said NATH Executive Director Tammy Modic.
The house itself has grown over the years with renovations that brought it up to modern standards. It is now handicap accessible and has energy-efficient heating and boiling systems.
"It has been totally renovated and brought up to date to allow for, I would say, a very warm, very efficient and a very welcoming place that provides and shows dignity to the humans that we are serving," said Bill Miller, president of the executive committee.
Residents are very grateful for everything Frederick Place does and for the community that supports it.
"The Lord has blessed the Rhinelander community and surrounding areas with the Frederick Place shelter facility. They are truly doing the Lord's work," Clay said.
