James Williams Middle School (JWMS) eighth grader Tyler Fredrick was recently honored by the Wisconsin Outdoor News magazine. Tyler's poem entitled "The Message of Winter" was selected as the first place winner in the magazine's annual Youth Writing Contest sponsored by Cabela's. The contest received entries from all over the state of Wisconsin including entries selected from the eighth grade science and language arts classes at JWMS.

The writing contest asked students to put their outdoor experiences on paper to share with readers of the Wisconsin Outdoor News magazine in either prose or poetry form. Wisconsin Outdoor News will now enter Tyler's poem in the 2014 Norm Strung Youth Writing Competition, which is sponsored by the Outdoor Writers of America Association, Safari Club International, the Izaak Walton League of America, and Delta Waterfowl.

Tyler will have a chance to win additional cash prizes. Tyler is the son of Tom and Tara Fredrick of Rhinelander and his sponsoring teachers are Karie Blemke and Jeff Skubal

NCES Students Participate in National Geographic Bee

Northwoods Community Elementary School's (NCES) fourth and fifth grade students have been expanding and testing their geographic knowledge in a variety of methods. This includes the use of classroom projects, challenge and trivia games, lesson activities and readings. One benchmark, along this pathway of becoming better geographers, was their participation in the National Geographic Bee, held in January.

Ten NCES students competed in the Preliminary Competition of the National Geographic Bee held on Jan. 8, 2014. After the students were challenged with questions ranging from ancient wonders to world capitals, a school champion was crowned. Kaylee Pontell, a fourth-grade student, won the NCES school-level competition. Two fifth graders, Brett Benes and Lucas Taege, finished in second and third place, respectively, in the competition.

The school-level bee, during which students answered oral questions on geography, served as the first leg of the 24th annual National Geographic Bee, which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Kaylee will continue in the competition, as she completes a written test for a chance to participate in the State Geography Bee, to be held early in April. She also has an opportunity to become eligible for a $25,000 college scholarship.

Environmental Learning Trail at Crescent

Michelle Flohr, first grade teacher at Crescent Elementary School, was looking for a way to take her instruction outdoors, while making use of the surrounding school property. She enlisted the help of Nick Wagler, who was interested in completing an Eagle Scout project. In the fall of 2012, Mrs. Flohr, fellow teachers Mrs. Michlig and Mr. Waksmonski, and Supervisor of Plant Operations Mr. Zdroik, worked with Nick and his mother, Paula, to lay out a tentative plan for an environmental learning trail.

Work began in spring of 2013 and continued through the summer, with completion of the project in the fall. Nick assembled and managed a crew of people to help clear the path and to build and install signage. Students and staff have been enjoying the trail, discovering wildlife and exploring nature all while getting fresh air and exercise.

Students will soon have the opportunity to snowshoe through the Crescent Winter Wonderland, looking for animal tracks and seasonal changes. Mrs. Flohr would like to thank all who were involved in this project.

Pelican School's New Teacher Mentoring Program

This year, Pelican Elementary School added four new teachers to the Pelican Family. They have welcomed first grade teachers Anthony Klein and Tanya Cook, kindergarten teacher Katie Andrastek and music teacher Kathy Karsten.

With all of these new faces, Pelican School principal Martha Knudtson wanted to make sure the new teachers had a successful school year. She assigned each new teacher a mentor teacher to help them adjust and become comfortable in their first year. The mentors include Laurie Pohnl - second/third looping teacher, Stephanie Pudlowski - multiage teacher, Amber Troutman - special education teacher, and Lynn Hawley - third grade teacher.

The mentors have had many opportunities to meet and guide the mentees in many areas such as classroom management, communication with others, and school policies. Not only has this been a positive initiative for the new teachers, but it has been a great learning experience for the mentors.
