Café Accordion Orchestra to perform March 8 at Nicolet College
Café Accordion is famous for a repertoire that draws inspiration from the French, Gypsy-influenced, romantic musette café and dance hall tunes that were all the rage in mid-20th century Paris, according to a press release announcing the group's Nicolet performance. The group, which has been performing since 1995, complements the musette with swing, waltzes, bassa novas, ballads, tangos, cha chas, rumbas and cumbias.
Café Accordion pulls off its unique and varied repertoire through the excellent musicianship of founder Dan Newton on the accordion and vocals. His orchestra includes Eric Mohring on mandolin, violin and vocals; Erik Lillestol on bass and vocals; Robert Bell on guitar and vocals; and Joe Steinger on percussion.
The group has performed at Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night Swing series in New York; the International Akkordeon Festival in Vienna, Austria; the Minnesota State Fair; as well as at numerous festivals, theaters and dance halls across the U.S.
"The Café Accordion musicians are passionate about their craft and about performing. This will be an amazing, high-energy concert. It'll be hard to stay in your seat," said Nicolet Theatre Director Jim Nuttall.
Café Accordion has released nine albums. Dancing on the Moon, the group's first recording, presents 17 French, Finnish and Latin dance tunes in the musette style. Le Disc Français is a tribute to the group's love affair with the "passion, romance, and beauty" of French music. The group's most recent album, La Zingara, is a collection of tunes connected to the Gypsy lifestyle, drawn from French, Greek, Finnish, Colombian, Mexican, Cabo Verdean and American sources.
