Bowling event honors fallen officer, supports scholarship fund
Dahlvig, a Rhinelander native and Vilas County Sheriff's Deputy, was killed in an on-duty traffic accident in April 2010. After their son's death, Ron and Cherri Dahlvig set up a scholarship fund in his name that supports students in the Criminal Justice-Law Enforcement program at Nicolet.
The goal of the scholarship fund is to keep Dahlvig's memory and his love of law enforcement alive and well.
That goal was at the forefront of a bowling event held at Hodag Lanes on Saturday where Dahlvig's friends and family gathered to remember him and support the scholarship that has become his legacy.
Dahlvig's mother, Cherrie, said the community has been a deep well of support in the endeavor.
"It feels wonderful to know that my son is so cared about and loved, it feels so wonderful," she said.
"Year after year we've been really lucky. The community has been absolutely phenomenal about donating stuff and backing us with whatever we do. Most of these people are his friends, so that is in itself terrific."
Dahlvig said that her son's love of law enforcement was second only to his love of family. That's why the family created the scholarship fund. She said seeing the memory of her son help others prepare for a life with a badge makes it all worthwhile.
"He loved being an officer. It was the most important thing in his life besides his family. Doing this and giving to the criminal justice program, I know he would be really happy with that because being an officer was his life," Dahlvig said. "It's wonderful to be able to help others that want to take that challenge on to walk in Kory's footsteps and become an officer."
After all the were pins knocked down, Dahlvig said her family will always be grateful for the support system that has surrounded them since 2010.
"We just want to make sure the community knows we really appreciate all they do and all the help they give," she said. "Being able to honor Kory like this, we couldn't do it without everybody so we are forever grateful for that."
