Erin Drescher wins Rhinelander Optimist Club essay contest
By Kayla Thomason-
"I wrote about how dreams are nothing to be scoffed at. If you work hard and let dreams motivate you, you will be able to have success," Erin said.
The contest was offered to sixth and eighth graders in Rhinelander schools.
"We had 14 submissions and we had specific judging criteria from Optimist International but we went through and covered all the names and just went through and scored based upon the judging criteria given to us and her's was deemed the best based upon the guidelines we were given," explained Mariah Busche, vice president of the Optimist Club.
When she heard that she won the contest, Erin ran to share the news with a friend.
"It just took me by surprise," Erin said. "I didn't think I'd win."
The Optimist Club is an international organization that focuses on helping youth in the community in fun or educational ways.
The Rhinelander club has been very active. Last year the group held an Easter Egg Hunt. The club has also hosted open skates, a bake sale at the farmer's market, and volunteered at various events including the Downtown Christmas Parade.
