By Paul Johnson-
When the administration arrived at JWMS starting before 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 7, the temperature was below zero and there were students waiting in parked cars to get into the school. It was pretty early and very cold but the students were present and ready to make the trip to Ski Brule. Students and staff gathered in the commons and waited to be separated into four groups to load the four buses headed up to Brule and by 7:10 a.m., they were on their way.
Once they arrived at Ski Brule, students geared up with all the needed equipment, went through a lesson, had skills assessed and headed to the hill. Some students reported that the first few runs of the morning were chilly, but after that they barely noticed the cold. Students came back talking of a few mishaps on the hills, watching peers successfully going over jumps and the good time that they had. By shortly after 5 p.m., all the buses were back and students were headed home.
A staff member reported that a patron at Ski Brule came up to him and made a comment about how well behaved our students were. This was a very appropriate closing to an event that was to celebrate students displaying positive behaviors! I almost forgot, probably one of the biggest accomplishments of the day-no injuries reported.
A second group of students and staff chose to spend the day at Fort Wilderness. Fort Wilderness has been providing JWMS students a winter fun day for almost 20 years. This year it was decided that this opportunity would be part of our PBIS program. On a chilly February morning, three busloads of students and staff headed out to Fort Wilderness for a day of fun. Once out at Fort Wilderness, students were divided into two teams and they spent parts of the day enjoying one of the many activities at Fort. This year students were able to ice skate, play broomball, snowshoe, cross country ski, tube, ride the "ice chair," and enjoy delicious drinks from the coffee shop. Unfortunately, the cold weather prevented students from enjoying a horsedrawn sleigh ride and individual horseback rides, but they were able to spend time in the stable showing the horses some love.
For the final group of students and staff, the day began in the auditorium, where attendance was taken and students headed out to one of the many activities being offered. Students had signed up to participate in two activities, one for the morning and one for the afternoon to fill their day at JWMS.
In the morning, students were able to create three art projects, prepare a vegetable pizza and a cranberry/orange pastry, have a snack prior to watching a movie and then answering trivia questions about the movie, try their skills at the Wii sports games, participate in dodgeball, lightning and other games in the gym or head out to Boom Lake for some ice fishing. Due to the cold weather, the ice fishing was delayed and students were able to enjoy hot chocolate and some ice fishing videos while waiting for the temperature to rise. The afternoon brought a second round of open gym, cooking, a movie and a snack, ice fishing (some students chose to stay on the lake all day and they were able to grill their own lunch), and a walk to the RIA ice rink for some skating.
The cold weather did not hamper the fun had by students and staff during the PBIS incentive. All students reported that they had a great day and one even commented that it was a little strange ice fishing and having fun with his teacher! Staff and students alike had a great day and positive behavior was displayed throughout the day.
All of us at JWMS are looking forward to our next PBIS schoolwide incentive and hope that we earn it very soon.
