The School District of Rhinelander is still actively trying to sell the former South Park School building located 511 South Pelham Street in Rhinelander.

The building has been used primarily for storage since the Northwoods Community Secondary School, its last occupant, moved into the high school at the beginning of the 2012-'13 school year.

As of Jan. 8, the building has a listed price of $159,500. The district is working with First Weber Group Broker Associate Ron Skagen to sell South Park.

The building was last discussed in open session by the Operations and Strategic Planning Committee back in September, when the building was listed at $250,000. At that time, the committee rejected lowering the price to $199,500. The sale of the building has not been discussed in open session since that time.

In October, following a closed session discussion, the Board of Education directed Superintendent Kelli Jacobi to work with Skagen on a new strategy to market the property, gauge interest and lower the asking price.

Those discussions resulted in the price being dropped from $250,000 to $179,500.

Now at the $159,000 mark, Jacobi said there have been "several showings" since the price has been reduced.

"I know several showings have taken place since the latest price reduction. I normally don't get names, only that a showing took place and then if they had any feedback to offer," Jacobi said. "They haven't had constructive feedback, anything that I would have made note of as something that we needed to address."

In September board member David Holperin suggested it was time for the district to look into auctioning off the building using sealed bids.

He noted Rhinelander has a number of commercial properties sitting around with for-sale signs in their front yards that aren't moving, buildings that are in much better condition than the South Park building.

Jacobi told the River News that sealed bids are still an option, but that the district is going to honor its contract with First Weber before exploring any other options.

"We will stay with Skagen through the end of our contract and reassess at that time," Jacobi said. "The contract runs through May 13, I believe."
