Vision screening at school was held the last week of January. As you know, good vision is essential for academic and athletic success as well as for the development of self-esteem. School vision screening is a school health service that promotes early identification and treatment of vision problems necessary for children to succeed. Given that 80 percent of all learning in a child's first 12 years of life is obtained through vision, we can do more to assure children see clearly in school and maximize their ability to learn. Poor vision is a barrier to learning.

The school district nurse and trained volunteers from the Rhinelander Lions Club recently screened the elementary students in grades K, 1, 3 and 5, as well as teacher referred students from grades 2 and 4. Vision screening identifies children with a potential vision problem. The purpose of vision screening is to identify and refer children with potential vision problems to an eye care professional or primary care provider for further examination, diagnosis and, if needed, treatment and follow up.

Vision screening is not a substitute for a complete professional eye examination. Screening does, however, detect decreased visual acuity. A deviation in visual acuity between the two eyes may indicate eye problems that are correctable during a child's early years. Many times such problems are not fully correctable if detection and treatment occur after six or seven years of age. Prevent Blindness America recommends a professional eye examination at birth, six months of age, before beginning school, and whenever parents suspect a child has a vision problem. In fact, Wisconsin's Children's Vision Law (Chapter 118.135): Requires school districts to encourage parents of kindergarten children to have their child's eyes examined by a doctor of optometry or evaluated by a physician. The total number of School District of Rhinelander students that were screened is as follows:

Total Screened - Referred to an eye specialist

Central: 148 - 5

Pelican: 200 - 10

NCES: 79 - 3

Crescent: 236 - 10

Total: 663 - 28

The School District of Rhinelander is very appreciative of the Rhinelander Lions volunteers and the assistance that they provide to the school district nurse. Thank you for your continual support.
