At Pelican School, the teachers were asked to step out of their comfort zone to plan a new and exciting lesson for their students to digitally enhance an activity. Continuing education training in technology allows teachers to bring knowledge back to the classroom. With the abundant resources offered by the district, teachers can be diverse and creative with their lessons.
Some classrooms teamed up and shared devices such as GPS (global positioning devices), a digital microscope, netbooks, flip cameras and iPads. What elementary students can do with technology is amazing. The 4K through third grade teachers were innovative and demonstrated common-sense application of digital learning. Below is a list of some of that day's activities.
iPads
The iPads were used by the second-grade students to create an advertisement with the help of the "30 hands" application to promote their invention. Students explained the benefits of the product to the consumer in a video.
During physical education students videotaped their teacher teaching individual athletic skills i.e basketball and baseball. Students then tried to duplicate the skill viewing the video.
Global Positioning Devices
The kindergartens paired up with their third grade reading buddies to explore with global positioning devices. This activity took the students outside first to find coordinate clues to then plug into the device and locate the treasure.
Another group stayed inside and found clues throughout the building and then repeated the process to find the geocaches.
Netbooks
Multiage students completed an Olympic scavenger hunt using multiple websites. This activity supported the unit on biographies of Olympic athletes past and present.
Digital Microscope
This microscope was able to take pictures of objects which were then projected onto the smartboard. Students used these pictures to create a book with questions about the unknown object.
Blogs
Several teachers have blogs. They posted the lesson on the blog. This allowed parents to be more involved in their child's learning. Parents can post comments and continue the discussion at home with their child.
Smartboard
First-grade students visited Netsmartz .com to learn internet safety. The teacher posed the question to the students "Is everything you read true?"
Third-grade students took a digital field trip. Many of the students had never visited a museum, so this virtual experience was educational and rewarding. This museum had three floors. http://www.mnh.si.edu/vtp/1-desktop
Smartboard Exchange is a site for educators to find activities to support and enhance a learning objective. The 4K students were able to check in each morning on the smartboard and choose hot or cold lunch by touching the screen.
Flip Cameras
The cameras were used by kindergarten students to film their partners reading books aloud about woodland animals. The film was then shared with the class on the smartboard.
