The Rhinelander High School Mock Trial has captured its 28th consecutive regional title.

Competing over the weekend at the 31st annual Mock Trial Regional Tournament in Wisconsin Rapids, Rhinelander No. 1 was unblemished in its quest for the title.

Each team competed in four rounds of competition with each round consisting of three judge's decisions.

Team No. 1 went 4-0 over the weekend, winning every single possible judge's decision.

"It was a decisive win for Team No. 1," said coach Kathy Vick-Martini. "This was our 28th consecutive regional championship and you might think that winning it that often that it wouldn't seem all that incredible to do it again, but believe me every one feels as good as the last."

Rhinelander Team No. 2 took fourth place, going 3-1 while winning seven out of 12 judge's decisions.

"The only team (Rhinelander No. 2) lost to was Wisconsin Rapids Team No. 1 and that's the team that Rhinelander Team No. 1 beat in the finals, so Rhinelander Team No. 2, they had the toughest competition other than Rhinelander Team No. 1 and they did a great job," Vick-Martini said.

Rhinelander won the state title last year - its 16th - but all but two students from that team graduated. That has tempered expectations a bit, Vick-Martini said, but this year's rookies came out firing on all cylinders to once again bring home the regional gold.

"At this point in the tournament there are so many good teams. Especially this year, we're the defending state champions but almost everyone graduated from that team. There are only two kids back from that team," Vick-Martini said. "The whole rest of the team is rookies, so we were very nervous going into the tournament this year. We thought this might be the year that ended the streak, so it was a very satisfying win."

Rhinelander Team No. 1 will now compete in the state tournament which will take place in Madison on March 9 and 10

RHS No. 1 is led by senior co-captains Lydia O'Brien and Amber Sheth, the only returning members of last year's state championship team. Their teammates are juniors Mike Anderson and Erin Tenderholt, sophomores Anna Catlin and Emily Ditzler, and freshmen Albiona Sabani, Ellie Rickman and Sydney Schallock.

Members of RHS No. 2 are sophomores Jarod Hoha, Faith Carris, and Bethany Stelbrink and freshmen Erin Bloom, Max Holperin, Zack DuBois and Matthew O'Melia.

The RHS teams are coached by Kathy Vick-Martini, attorney Jim Jacobi and Oneida Circuit Court judge Michael Bloom. Also assisting the team this year are Nicolet play director Jim Nuttal, attorneys Amy Ferguson, Steve Michlig and Jim Weis and retired Oneida Circuit Court Judge Robert E. Kinney.
