Broomball tournament brings extra excitement to Fisheree
"It's amazing. The teams have a great time. They look forward to it every year," said the chamber's tourism and event coordinator Kate Bauman. "It's just a great chance to get out with your friends, have a good time, maybe fall on the ice a few times, it's all in good fun. We almost didn't have enough teams, but once we got the word out that we only had three, two others came forward right away. I think that shows just how much people are enjoying the event. We're glad we can join up with the Lions and the Fisheree and make this event as great as it can be."
The winner of the tournament got to take home the illustrious Golden Broom. This year's winner was the team from Bucketheads.
Bauman has been taking on a larger role with the chamber following the departure of executive director Lara Reed. So far everything's going smoothly, she said.
"It's going really good. (I'm) just trying to stay on top of all our events, making sure they're running as smoothly as possible, that they're a benefit to our community," Bauman said.
Though the tournament is a part of the festival, the money generated goes to support the chamber and the Rhinelander Soccer Association.
"We divvy the money up between us and the soccer association. They donate the nets and the ball and have helped with our courts. They do a lot for us," Bauman said.
That's fine with Lions Committee Chair Mike Romportl as he said the tournament, along with the snowshoe race Sunday, help bring additional people to the Fisheree.
"It brings people in, people that might not have come without it so that's a good thing. People play and then come in for some food or come in to see what we're up to," Romportl said.
"It's the same with the snowshoe race. It brings more people here and that's always a good thing."
Romportl added that the club is always open to additional partners and events to continue to grow the Fisheree.
"We're happy to team up with anyone that wants to add events and make this bigger and better," Romportl said.
"It's something that will hopefully continue to grow. We concentrate on the Fisheree, but we're always looking for other partners to help bring more people in with other events."
