Peggy's Emporium closing after 17 years in business
Citing economic issues and health problems for longtime furniture entrepreneur Peggy Colburn, co-owner Chad Novak said it's time to shut down and move on.
"The way this business is going, it's just not doing very well with the economy the way it is and with Peggy having some health issues, it's just not worth it anymore," Novak said.
A final closure date has not been set. Novak said inventory will need to be sold before the store closes for the last time.
"Basically, we're starting our going-out-of-business sale and retirement sale right now. I'm not putting a date on it because I need to sell everything out of here," Novak said. "When it's gone, it's gone."
To help sell the remaining merchandise, Novak said every product in the store - from the beds to the antiques to everything in the consignment store in the basement - will be on sale.
"We've got up to 70 percent off on select items. Everything's got to go. Everything in the store is priced down. We've got 50 percent off on some items. All floor model bedding's going to be at least 20 percent off," Novak said. "It all needs to go."
While this may be the end of the road for Peggy's, Novak said he will continue to make his furniture creations. (see related story below)
"I'm still going to make some wood furniture, make rustic stuff, probably do some wholesaling with some different companies around the area," he said.
Novak said he's very proud of what he and Colburn have accomplished at Peggy's.
"Every mattress I've ever made, I've sewed it. That's how I always built beds. I took a lot of pride in what I built," Novak said. "We've tried to serve the community the best we could and we've had a great time doing it. I'll be honest, all the memories have been great. We ran this business so family and fun-oriented that every day was great. There's been so many great memories. It sucks what's going on right now, but it's the smartest thing to do."
Novak said he and Colburn want to thank the community for the support over the last 17 years. He also had an important message for shoppers in the Northwoods.
"We just want to thank everyone so much for letting us serve the community," Novak said. "One thing I'd like to say is to help small businesses because they need help out there. They really do. That's the biggest message I can say - support your community."
