Record crowd attends Frederick Place anniversary dinner
It was easy to see why Modic is so impressed by the community support as the benefit dinner saw its largest crowd yet.
Over 170 people attended the event, which, as the main single-day fundraiser for the shelter, is big news for Modic.
"This is our number one one-day event for the year. We have other fundraisers that are spread out over a period of time, but this is the biggest one-day event that we have and thankfully it's packed," Modic said. "We sold 174 tickets. Last year, we had 144, so we're up from last year. It's very exciting."
The generosity of the record crowd made it easy for Modic to once again praise the community that has embraced Frederick Place.
"It's really, really exciting. There's faces that maybe I only get to see once a year, but I know that they're here and they're a part of the event and willing to share with us and celebrate," Modic said. "That's the big thing that we want to get across tonight, that we really are celebrating everybody who's here because without them, Frederick Place wouldn't exist."
All of the proceeds from the event go to support shelter operations.
"(The funds) go for the operation of Frederick Place so they help support the residents, they help with the electric bills and the heating bills and the groceries and all of the things that support Frederick Place," Modic said.
Attendee Bill Smith said he was happy to open his pocketbook to support the shelter.
"It's easy to support something like this. I don't think everyone realizes just how much it takes to keep something like the shelter up and running and making sure it has everything it needs, and the people who end up there have everything they need. It takes a lot. I'm not around (the city) as much anymore so I'm not able to physically help out by volunteering, but I'll always make sure I can financially help out," Smith said.
"Something like this is just too important to make excuses. They need our help and we're here to make sure they get that help."
