Rhinelander Lions Club ready for 'Christmas Not Alone' dinner
Dedicated to the proposition that no one should have to be alone on Christmas, the Rhinelander Lions Club is once again hosting its traditional "Christmas Not Alone" dinner.
The Lions and volunteers from the community will serve turkey and all the trimmings from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 25 at the Rhinelander Armory.
The armory is located on Adams Way, formerly known as Military Avenue, off of Washington Street near the UPS complex.
The meal is free, though donations are accepted. Anyone who wishes to donate to this meal in advance can send donations to the Rhinelander Lions, P.O. Box 1005, Rhinelander.
"The reason it started was it's for people who are home alone on Christmas, so they could get out and socialize on Christmas Day," said Lion Tom O'Rourke. "That's the main reason for it. You don't have to be alone, though. Everybody's welcome to come and join in. That's the main reason for the meal, though, to give people a place to go on Christmas where they can be with other people and celebrate with other people, so they don't have to be alone on the holiday."
Those who no longer drive but want to attend the meal can catch a ride with the Rapid Cab Company which provides free rides to and from the armory.
"For people who have no transportation, the Rapid Cab Company will deliver people to the armory and pick them up for no charge on Christmas Day," O'Rourke said.
Rapid Cab can be reached at (715) 365-7433.
The Lions are also offering free meal delivery for those who aren't able to make it to the armory.
"If someone can't make it to the armory, to the actual meal, we deliver meals to anyone that can't make it," O'Rourke said. "We like to know a little bit in advance so we can make sure we have everything ready, but people can call on Christmas Day, too. There are four numbers people can call to get a delivery set up."
Those numbers are (715) 282-5904, (715) 360-2549, (715) 490-1899 and (715) 362-6534. Those numbers should be called on or before Dec. 24. People can also call (715) 490-0048 between 9 a.m. and noon on Christmas morning.
The Lions would also like to thank Trig's grocery store and other local businesses for their continued support of the meal.
"We buy all of our supplies from Trig's grocery store and Trig's bakes the turkeys for us, so we're very grateful for that," O'Rourke said. "They've always been great about helping us get everything ready for the meal so we can continue to put this on for the community. We also receive a lot of other donations from many other businesses in town that help up defer the cost of the meal so we can continue to provide it free of charge."
