Slumberland Furniture stores across the Midwest, including the two locally-owned facilities in Minocqua and Rhinelander, will be helping families and their children have a more restful future.

That's because the two stores will be once again participating in their "Homes for the Holidays" program donating 32 mattress sets and frames to local area children.

"It's an annual event," Jason Hesch, general manager of the Minocqua and Rhinelander Slumberland stores, said.

"We partner with a charity in the area that helps us identify families with kids who are sleeping on the floor. We donate a mattress, box spring and frame to the family for the child who is sleeping on the floor."

The Homes for the Holidays program is a part of Slumberland's non-profit 40 Winks Foundation. The foundation partners with local charity organizations to donate beds to families in need.

And if you think there aren't many families in the Northwoods who are needy, just spend some time taking a look at the local charitable programs, including this one to get an idea of the local need.

Numbers are the highest ever this year for many organizations.

"Between the Rhinelander and Minocqua stores we're donating 32 sets. This is the most we've ever done. It's a big year this year," states Hesch.

The Minocqua store opened almost seven years ago, with the Rhinelander store being the in the family long before that.

Hesch stated the program has been in place for many years.

"I'd say we've been doing this for 10-plus years," he said. "The way the program works, we donate directly to an organization or charity. This year we're working through the Human Service Center in Lac du Flambeau and Rhinelander."

Hesch said that the distribution was to take place the week before Christmas.

"We already ordered the mattresses," he said. "So they are supposed to be coming on one or two of our trucks this week. We'll get the mattresses at the Rhinelander location first, so it will be 64 pieces, plus frames that will be arriving."

The Slumberland Furniture stores in Minocqua and Rhinelander are a locally-owned and operated franchise by the Hesch family.
