Rhinelander residents in nursing home care or in assisted living will receive a special angel this holiday season thanks to the GFWC Rhinelander Woman's Club.

Since October the local women's club has been working to create close to 300 Christmas cards that will be delivered to six centers in town: Cumberland Heights, Friendly Village Nursing and Rehabilitation, Grace Lodge Assisted Living, Rennes Health and Rehab Center and both Country Terrace locations.

"The club has been doing this project for three years and each year we add more residents to the list. Very little money is spent on the project, however many hands and good ideas create a special greeting," according to project leader Jo Fabich.

The project is unique because members make use of last year's Christmas card covers to cut out angel forms. The angels are embellished with a gold or silver trim halo and glued to create a new card. A special greeting is printed on each. Twenty club members assisted in various ways. The cards will be delivered next week.

"The General Federation of Women's Clubs is a unifying force, bringing together local women's clubs, with members dedicated to strengthening their communities and enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service," a club press release explained. "With nearly 100,000 members in affiliated clubs in every state and more than a dozen countries, GFWC members are community leaders who work locally to create global change by supporting the arts, preserving natural resources, advancing education, promoting healthy lifestyles, encouraging civic involvement, and working toward world peace and understanding."

The local club has been organized since 1898 when 20 women interested in study, fellowship, and improving the city formed the Rhinelander Woman's Club. Their first project involved the purchase of 300 books for the first library in the city.
