The Salvation Army has had a wonderful turnout of volunteers during this year's bell-ringing campaign - completely filling Saturday shifts - but more people are still needed for the weekday noon to 6 p.m. shift.

With the milder winter more people are ringing every day, Salvation Army officials said.

"Our hours were down (last year) because of the bitterly cold weather," said Kim Swisher, 2014 Kettle Campaign Coordinator. "This year there are less cancellations and we are seeing more groups choose to ring together. We are very greatful to Mother Nature for the warmer temperatures this year and hope the weather holds for the rest of the remaining days,"

So far, 65 volunteers have rung bells. Approximately 100 shifts have been filled or are reserved for the upcoming days.

At least $12,000 has been raised so far this year. The Salvation Army's goal is $35,000.

Anyone who is interested in ringing may visit http://oneidawi.volunteerfirst.org to check the open shifts. Bell-ringing will continue until Dec. 20.

This is the second year the Salvation Army is accepting online donations, which can be made at https://www.onlineredkettle.org/rhinelander.

Checks can be mailed to the Rhinelander Salvation Army, post office box 1081, Rhinelander 54501.

For every dollar collected in the red kettles, $.86 stays right here, according to the Salvation Army website. "The remaining $.14 is used in state and national relief efforts. This past year, the Rhinelander Salvation Army provided emergency assistance to 355 adults and children, which is a 39 percent increase over last year," according to the website. "Your donation allows us to support local organizations and efforts including the Frederick Place shelter, school back-pack programs, and assistance to local families in need emergency support. We have partnered with ACES -- Area Churches for Emergency Services -- to use your contributions in an even more efficient and effective manner. Recognizing the increased need, churches have come together to work with the Rhinelander Salvation to create a unified effort to serve our community."
