As part of its annual holiday memorial program, Carlson Funeral Home has selected three Rhinelander High School students to share original poems they wrote for the Christmas Memories 2014 Memorial Service to be held at Carlson Funeral Home on Saturday, Dec. 13. The winning poets are members of the creative writing classes at RHS led by instructor, Nancy Kuczmarski. The authors are Kirby Kuehn with his poem "The Last Christmas," Shelby Kuehn with her submission "Forever and Always Part Two," and MaCaela Herman with her poem "Grandma's Memory."

The Carlson Funeral Home has organized a holiday memorial program for 21 years in support of families and friends who have lost a loved one, especially during the past year. As part of the program, the firm has sponsored a poetry contest open to various students from throughout the area, inviting them to craft a unique poem that deals with the themes of the holidays, family, memories, and loved ones who have passed away. The winning authors will read their poems during the service.

"The student poetry competition has truly become a highlight of the memorial program for attendees as well as for our staff," said Bruce Carlson, funeral director and president of Carlson Funeral Home. "It has been extremely rewarding to witness and encourage the awesome talent our students possess. This year's submissions are some of the very best we have seen."

"We are grateful for the support and guidance provided by Mrs. Kuczmarski and extend our gratitude to the students of RHS who took the time and effort to share such quality and heartfelt poems. Selecting just three winners was very difficult. Because of this fact, we are pleased to present a gift certificate to all participating students in appreciation for their work. These students are a credit to their school, family, and community as well as to themselves," Carlson added.

The Christmas Memories 2014 Memorial Service begins at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Carlson Funeral Home and will feature the winning poems as presented by Kirby, Shelby, and MaCaela. Pre-service music begins at 1:30 p.m. Any member of the community is welcome to attend this time to remember and refresh.
