Minocqua business owner receives national book award
The Moonbeam Children's Book Awards "are designed to bring increased recognition to exemplary children's books and their creators, and to support childhood literacy and life-long reading," according to the awards website.
Metropulos is a professional wildlife artist who was born with dyslexia. He said the award illustrates just how valuable creativity is in the learning process.
"It has always been my goal to write books to inspire children to express themselves through art and writing, and look at the finer details of this world around us," Metropulos said. "Winning an award for helping to promote children's literacy is a great honor"
"Safari" is the second in what is planned to be an extensive series of animal-themed "What is it?" books, each of which highlights Metropulos' paintings. The reader is asked to guess each animal using the artwork, a riddle, and a sound button for clues. Once the reader turns a page, he or she will see the answer. The reader can also learn more about each featured animal and open a window to see how Metropulos develops his paintings.
Metropulos' writing method uses formulas designed to help children with reading disabilities retain what they have read. He said the books appeal to all reading levels and abilities.
"It is an interactive book for the whole family because adults and children of all ages learn something from the "What is it?" books" Metropulos said.
The first "What is it?" book featured birds, the second African animals. The next book will be about pets.
