The stone gates remembered so fondly by residents of Rhinelander's Highview Parkway neighborhood are now fully restored, but money is still needed for work on the walls near the pillars and for a garden the city of Rhinelander hopes to plant near the entrance of the neighborhood.

A donation last year from Jim and Jean Miazga helped to preserve the ornamental stone columns that sit on either side of Highview Parkway at the junction with Pelican Street.

That work has been completed, including the installation of a large stone at the site with a plaque acknowledging the donation, but more work still needs to be done.

The city's Historic Preservation Committee discussed its plans for the site, which includes work on the walls and the garden, at its meeting Thursday.

"This will be an ongoing project," said Dawn Rog, committee chairperson. "If money comes in, we'll chip away at repairing the walls and maybe putting in the garden."

Mayor Dick Johns said the city is actively looking for donations for the work.

"The pillars are ready and the stone is in there, but we want to repair the walls and we're talking about putting a little garden in there, but we need donations for that," he said. "Anyone who wants to donate can contact me and we can discuss our plans and see what we can do."

Johns can be reached at (715) 365-8600 or via email at [email protected].
