Melinda Childs, ArtStart's new development director, is settling in.

In an interview this week, she said she is loving the organization and Rhinelander.

"(ArtStart is) great, it's been a lot of fun and the people that I have met that are involved - the volunteers and the board members - are just really awesome, a fun group of people. (They have a) good attitude, everyone is excited about what ArtStart is doing," Childs said.

She is in charge of financial development which involves applying for grants, sponsorship, growing the donor base and more.

Three weeks into her new job, she is getting into the flow of how ArtStart operates and what it offers the community. She said she is familiarizing herself with the vast array of new shows that have already been planned for the upcoming months.

Some of those events will include Zombie Prom, zen tango class, readings and more.

"Right now I'm really focusing on learning about what they already have going on and just adding in my ideas on how to add to what they are already doing and add infrastructure," she said.

Childs said ArtStart has done a really good job at not letting the distance from other organizations hamper what it offers the community. She is also impressed with the quality of the artwork and the programs that engage the community and bring something new to Rhinelander.

"I think the mentality and the ideas and the creativity and the innovation at ArtStart is on par with the organizations that I was involved with, it's just high quality and that really impressed me," she said.

Childs has been working in arts management for over 10 years. She moved her family - her husband and two young children - from Minnesota to take the ArtStart job.

"I'm really impressed. From my perspective, working with arts nonprofits in the (Twin Cities), I'm really impressed by everything ArtStart has done so far," she said. "I think that Rhinelander is really, really lucky to have an organization like ArtStart."

The arts and cultural center was founded three years ago and continues to be operated by volunteers. It is located in the former federal building in Rhinelander. For more information on upcoming events at ArtStart, visit www.artstartrhinelander.org.
