The School District of Rhinelander officially took over operation of the Aspirus Community Fitness Center on Monday.

"We decided to terminate our contract with the YMCA and decided to take over operations of the fitness center," said Director of Business Services Marta Kwiatkowski.

The transition will bring about a couple of changes for the center, which is located inside Rhinelander High School.

For example, new hours have been put in place. The center will be open from 7 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday from now until Aug. 29.

Starting Sept. 1, the center will be open every weekday from 6 to 7:45 a.m. Additional afternoon hours will also be available. The center will be open from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 3:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday. It will be open from 7 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays.

The Heck Family Community Pool is open and free to the public from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday.

New fees will also be implemented. Individuals will pay $15 per month for unlimited use of the fitness center. Families will be charged $25 per month for unlimited use. Day passes are also available for $3 per person. Hodag Hall Walker passes, which allow users to walk the halls of the school for exercise, are free and can be obtained at the desk in the fitness center.

Students age 12 through 18 can use the center free of charge, however they are required to fill out a membership form. An orientation class is required for 12 and 13-year olds.

In order to reintroduce the center, the district is waiving fees for the month of September.

"I think a lot of people don't know about this because every time I talk to somebody about it, they don't realize it's open to the public and that there's more than just the fitness center - there's the pool and people can walk the hallways when the center is open. There's so much people didn't know about that we're really excited about," Kwiatkowski said.

"We're also going to have trained fitness coaches before and after school, and we'll have a personal trainer available to people upon request and an athletic trainer to help people design a workout."

The district has also remodeled the center's layout.

After hearing that some users weren't thrilled about having to navigate around high school students to get to things like the cardio equipment, the machines have now been reorganized so that all cardio equipment is now right by the entrance of the center with weights set up on the other end.

"We separated the cardio equipment so it's right where people come in and it's away from, separate from the equipment that's usually used by the students," Kwiatkowski said.

"Even though this is a high school fitness center, you won't feel like you're in a high school. It's big, it's separate. People should really try it out and they'll see it's run like any other fitness center."
