Bargain hunters pack downtown Rhinelander on Redikulus Dae
The scene could only mean one thing for Northwoods residents. Redikulus Dae, a beloved summer tradition in Rhinelander, was back for its 2014 installment.
Downtown Rhinelander Inc. Executive Director Maggie Steffen was out and about, helping to promote the different stores in the downtown district. She said she looks forward to Redikulus Dae all year long.
"It's a traditional event, so everyone remembers coming as a child and they want to carry on that tradition with their own children," she said. "It also gives people another reason to come downtown and sometimes that helps remind people just how much there is to see down here and check out."
While the street sale is a great way to get out and interact with the community, it's the prices that may be the biggest draw of all. The crazy costumes play into the festivities, but the real reason Redikulus Dae is so ridiculous is the sheer amount of bargains available to shoppers.
Mickie Jaeger was visiting from Saukville. After reading about the event she knew she had to visit the downtown area and give it a look.
"We saw it in the paper and we thought it would be something fun to do," she said. "I really like it so far. There's a lot going on and I've got a few items in the back of my mind that I might purchase. I haven't seen any really crazy deals, but I'm going to keep searching. I think they're out there."
Josh McGeshick set up a booth in front of his shop, Harumph Comics, one of downtown Rhinelander's newest businesses. He said his stock is surely going to catch some attention.
"We have hardcover, trade paperbacks, monthly issues, toys, collectibles and more," he said. "There are a lot of kids running around with their parents and having a lot of fun. They're excited when they see the stuff. With the comic book genre so popular right now, there's a lot of excitement involved. It appeals to the younger crowd, and now the adults are into it too. We have a lot of games out here that appeal to teenagers and adults."
McGeshick said he's been looking forward to the annual street sale for weeks now. It's one of his favorite days of the year.
"It's such a fun event," he said. "I love Redikulus Dae so much, ever since I was a kid. I remember coming down here with my family and walking around. It's just really great."
Trisha Smits was in town from Wausau visiting friends. This wasn't her first trip to Redikulus Dae and she said she was excited to bargain hunt.
"I've been here before and have found some really great deals," she said. "I'm hoping to check out the shoes and maybe some camping gear. I just like walking around though too. It's a beautiful day."
The forecast called for warmth and sunshine all day long, perfect weather for Redikulus Dae. An impressive crowd had already gathered early Wednesday morning to check out the deals. The early bird gets the worm, after all. Steffen said she was expecting record attendance.
"I think by lunchtime, the street is going to be packed," she said. "I can't tell you a number, but I think it's going to be walking-room only. We're going to have a lot of fun."
At its core, Redikulus Dae is such a treasured Rhinelander tradition because it's a chance to gather together and interact with friends and neighbors. If tourists like Jaeger or Smits take notice, that's an added bonus.
"As locals, we wait all winter long to be able to get outside and do things," Steffen said. "Summer is a special time in the Northwoods and this tradition is part of summer up here. It's a time to grab one of those tourists and show them what Rhinelander is all about and help them realize it's a great place to live, or at least visit. It's a chance to showcase our community."
