Sunset Junction to host karaoke competition starting May 6
By Kayla Thomason-
The qualifying rounds will be held May 6, 13, 20, 27 and June 3, 10, 17 and 24.
The final round, to be held July 1, will pit each evening's winners against one another for the big prize.
Only solo amateur singers are allowed to compete, duos are not allowed. There is no fee to participate.
"We invite anybody that has a voice to come down and try out for our contest," said Caroll Levanetz, owner of Sunset Junction.
Each singer should be registered with the deejay by 6 p.m. the day of the contest. The competition will wrap up around 8:30 p.m.
Singers choose their own songs but will perform in random.
Contestants will be judged on their voice, knowledge of the song, timing, audience's reaction, and their stage presence.
"We've got talent that could be on 'American Idol,' they could easily, easily qualify," said Sunset Junction's deejay Col. Tom.
The singers will be judged by the patrons at the bar, on a scale of one to 10, with 10 being the highest.
"Bring some people with you, friends, relative, in-laws, outlaws, bring them down because at the end of each contest you do vote and whoever is here votes for the person that they want and it is by their vote how the people win," Levanetz said.
Each night the singer with the most points qualifies for the final round.
Five attendance points will be awarded to each singer every Tuesday they show up, adding to their total score.
The final round will be based on a scale of one to 40, one being the lowest and 40 the highest.
"It's so much fun, we do have a lot of fun, we dress up and have the bar decorated," Levanetz said.
They decorate the bar with ponchos and sombreros each Tuesday for the contest.
The top two finishers will receive a nine-day pass to the Hodag Country Festival, a value of $130.
Third- and-fourth-place winners will receive a $25 gift certificate for Sunset Junction.
Levanetz came up with the contest to fill the void between Cinco de Mayo and the Hodag Country Festival.
She said she thought a karaoke contest with Hodag Country Festival tickets as a prize sounded like a nice change of pace.
Hodag Country Festival's 2014 lineup includes Kenny Rogers, Craig Campbell, Marty's Party, Josh Turner, Kellie Pickler, Tracy Lawrence, Darius Rucker, Easton Corbin, Sawyer Brown, David Nail, Blackjack Billy, Neal McCoy, Sara Evans, Jerrod Niemann, Josh Thompson and Eric Paslay.
For those who enjoy margaritas, they will be on sale for $2 apiece on Tuesdays.
A complete list of rules can be picked up at the bar, located at 137 W Rives St.
